A. “Resume to Impress” Workshop

Event Information:

Hosted by Curtin Consultancy Association from Curtin University Malaysia, this career workshop aimed to provide comprehensive exposure to students in the Consulting Industry through a series of shared experiences, along with tips on resume creation, best interview practices and resume screening activities.

Event Highlights:

1. Common Resume Mistakes

After a brief introduction of Jess and Job Majestic, Jess shared her knowledge regarding some of the common resume mistakes that she and her fellow recruiters have seen over the years. Some of the mistakes include:

  1. Not including a professional profile photo
  2. Lack of focus on job scope
  3. Using unsuitable font styles and sizes
  4. Unorganised resume layout
  5. Poor formatting and sequence in the Working Experience Section

and more.

2. Resume Preparation Tips

Jess also shared the best resume preparation tips on choosing the most suitable resume format, carrying out job description keyword research and surveying the best resume samples.

3. Resume Writing Guide

Next, Jess provided a comprehensive guide on resume writing, highlighting several key areas such as keyword research, choosing the best font styles and sizes, contact details, resume format and more.

4. High-quality Resume Analysis

Jess also included a short session to present high-quality resumes and provided a detailed explanation of all the quality attributes that good resumes must-have.

5. How Recruiters Present Candidates to Clients

After a short break, the workshop continued with a session on how recruiters present their candidates to hiring clients.  Jess shared her experience as a recruiter and how the recruitment industry works. This session was particularly interesting as participants were introduced to the recruitment world and understood how to present themselves to the recruiters.

6. Introduction to Novoresume

In the following session, Jess introduced Novoresume, an online resume and cover letter builder. Besides recommending the site to participants, Jess also emphasised the importance of using resume building sites.

7. Cover Letter Preparation 101

In the final session, Jess covered the essential tips when it comes to preparing a strong cover letter. Some of the pointers include:

  1. Crafting a clear email subject
  2. Using the right salutations
  3. Including the right content
  4. Finishing with the best closing statement

8. Resume Review

After the Q&A session, the team held a surprising resume review session to provide a live demonstration on how recruiters screen through resumes and highlight common mistakes.

B. LinkedIn Workshop

Hosted by Curtin Consultancy Association from Curtin University Malaysia for the second time, this time the career workshop aimed to provide comprehensive exposure to students on how to use the LinkedIn wisely during their job-hunting journey.

Based on her personal experience, Jess also explained 4 steps on how to build an effective LinkedIn profile to further boost students’ personal brand:

  • First impression matters
  • An effective summary
  • Update your profile
  • Take advantage of relevant keywords

4. How to Build Rapport on LinkedIn

After a short break, the session continued with Jess sharing ways to build rapport on LinkedIn:

  • Expand professional network
  • Stay in touch with connections

5. How to Job-hunt Using LinkedIn

Lastly, Jess demonstrated ways to utilise LinkedIn during job-hunting:

  • Tips to be more visible to recruiters
  • How to use the job search function
