A video resume, or known as ‘visume’. Basically a video resume is turning the details in your resume into a short video by a job seeker.
Why video resume is so important?
A video resume is quite important especially in the year 2020 because interviewers are able to assess the candidates’ communication skills before interviewing them.
Video resume has become a new trend in recruitment. A good video resume can provide a better choice for the interviewers when they are having a dilemma in choosing multiple candidates to interview.
Making a good visume is another bonus for you, especially if you are applying for video making industries!
How to make a video resume script?
A visume script should include

A self-introduction can include name, position applied, academic background and language competency.
You may want to say
Hi, Interviewers, I am Jess! I saw your ads on a job seeker website recruiting for Business Marketing Specialist. I have just graduated from the Marketing department of ABC University this year. I am able to speak fluent Chinese and English and I also got a band 5 in my MUET exam.
2. Work Experiences
If you have some work experiences, you may try to make a summary of your most valuable skills and experiences in your industry. Try to include some of your past working achievements.
For example,
I have been working in the digital marketing industry for 10 years and my area of expertise is managing social media accounts and monitoring digital marketing campaigns.
I’m highly skilled in creating and implementing client-centered, successful campaigns, aimed at improving brand awareness and presence.
Recently, I have just completed my Master in Creative Digital Media in ABC University.
These are the sectors that I am familiar with and are equipped with suitable set of skill. I am looking forward to know more about your company.
If you are a fresher, you may provide examples for any club activities and internship experience that are relevant to the applied job. Remember to tell them regarding your achievement in the internship company.
For example,
I have actively participated in club activities back when I was in university. I was involved in quite a number of events in the campus. From the events that I’ve mentioned, I was in charge of designing the posters, copy write for campus activities, organize event flows, and also contact for sponsorship matters.
From all the activities that I’ve participated in, I came to realize that I like designing and copywriting, that is the reason I applied for the online marketing position at ABC company during my internship. My job was to manage the company’s Facebook and IG, copywriting and poster design.
Software that I have used was Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator. Aside from that, I was involved in the company’s event planning. Fortunately, I managed to help the company to increase their followers on FB and IG for up to 20%.

You can mention the background of the company or the job scope, and combine it with your aspiration.

Even though marketing jobs are quite challenging, I do like the sense of accomplishment the job could offer. As a result, I’ve decided to continue my development in the marketing industry after I completed my studies.

How to make a video resume using a smartphone?
You can download InShot from App Store or Google Play. It is free! Inshot is quite powerful when comes to video editing.
Although it might not be as good as using professional software like premiere pro, InShot is sufficient enough when it comes to basic video editing.
What are the things to take note when taking a video resume?
There are also a few more points that I would recommend to pay attention to when you are recording video resume.
1. Try your best to treat it as a speech and show your confidence in video
A good visume will boost the interviewers’ favorability. The most important part of the video is to speak clearly and the contents are distinctive, not too fast nor too slow.
Write down the visume script beforehand and memorize it. Try to avoid forgetting the visume script or keep looking off-lens.
This is because you will look pretty obvious in front of the camera even if you make any minor movement. Remember to speak facing the camera, not to your monitor! It’s totally fine to take a few more shots, as long as it looks natural.
2. Speak loudly and clearly, and make sure that the mic has no problem in the video resume
You will need to find a quiet place with sufficient lightings, plain colour wall background to shoot your visume.
If your mic is bad, you could try to get yourself a earphone or professional audio recording (like BOYA BY-M1) as below. You could get this on Shopee or Lazada with the price ranging from RM10 to RM150.
3. You can use hand gestures to show your logo to make the video resume look more interesting
Don’t forget to record your video horizontally, if not your video will be looking like this
4. Be creative, but try to balance in between
You can show your creativity and editing skills in the video resume. But, at the end of the day, it is still an interview. Try to balance between creativity and professionalism. If you are unsure, it’s better to keep it in a conservative way for your visume.
