Don’t during an interview session (Tips on how to pass interviews in Malaysia)

1. Being late

The biggest mistake for an interview is to be late, especially when you are late for no reason! You are causing a big problem for the interviewers by delaying their schedule. Besides, the interviewers will think poorly of you for having bad time management, and if you are being assigned with certain tasks in the future, will you be able to finish it on time? Depart early from home to prevent unexpected events (bad traffic, having problems finding the location of interview) that will delay your time.

2. Didn’t bring your resume for interview

Although you should have sent in your resume when applying for the job, you should bring 3-5 copies of your resume when going for an interview (there is a possibility of having 5 interviewers), and hand it over to the interviewers. If you did not bring your resume, there is a possibility of you being disqualified without them interviewing you. Therefore, remember to bring along your resume along with your certificate. Otherwise, you are making a worthless effort.

3. Amount of speech

When you spent more than 15 minutes to answer a question, this did not earn you an extra point. Talking too much does not mean that you are great in expressing yourself. In the eyes of some interviewers, you are a talkaholic and that you might disturb your colleagues at work. It is sensible to control your speech. If you are being questioned, be concise and precise when answering it.

If you are being asked: what is the most fulfilling thing in your university life?

Assuming that a perfect answer for this will be:

During my third year, my music club friends and I organised the largest open stage concert ever in university. We invited 12 artists from local, and 5000 people attended the concert. We managed to raise twenty thousand for charity.

4. Sitting posture

Bad sitting posture not only leaves a poor impression in the minds of the interviewers but also affects your overall performance. You neither should be slumped sitting nor cross your leg as the interviewers will think that you are uninterested to the job. Sit up straight while lean slightly forward, and show that you are being attentive. Do not rub your hands as it shows that you are nervous and unconfident.

5. Attire

Attire discloses one’s personality. Attire that is overly casual emits vibes, showing that you are lacking in professionalism. Outfits that are overly exposed such as shorts, slipper, and jeans are prohibited.  Generally, the proper attire would be formal clothes. By wearing the correct outfit, it shows respect to oneself, at the same time, showing your respect to others.

Male: A shirt, a suit trouser and a pair of leather shoe

Female: A skirt that goes below your knees/ office wear, leather shoe/high heel, and light makeup

6. Being excessively passive

Interviews are normally being done in the form of question and answer. The interviewers will ask a question followed by you answering it. Yet, how can you appear to be initiative? Usually, before the interview end, you would be asked whether there is anything that you would like to ask. You should seize this opportunity to ask job-related questions that you are obscure. For example, “May I know when would I being informed whether if I am being accepted for the job?” or “Do your company has any future plan?” and etc. These show your interest in the job.

Overall, these are all you can do when preparing for an interview (Tips on how to pass an interview in Malaysia). In hope for those that are going for an interview, especially fresh graduates to be successful and are able to find their ideal job. Good Luck!
