How to Write Resume Contact Information

1. Always Include Them Above The Fold

It’s common to see working professionals exchange their business cards when they meet someone new, before getting into the business.

Your resume contact information functions the same way – to give a brief introduction of who you are. Hence, it is only normal to place the section at the top of your resume and it should be the first section that hiring managers see.

“Above the fold” means the upper half of the front page of your resume. The contact information section is typically placed in the top centre or top left side of the resume.

  2. Resume objective
  3. Most relevant skills 

2. Things to Include in Your Resume Contact Information

a. Here are the most important/basic things to include in your contact information section:

  1. Your full name – Make sure it is the same as your I/C name.
  2. Email address – Use your personal email address, not your current work address!
  3. Phone number – Add your country code (e.g. +6).

b. Whenever applicable, also include these:

  1. Professional profile link – E.g. Your LinkedIn profile.
  2. Portfolio link – E.g. Your videos, blog articles, mobile apps, etc. 
  3. Video resume link – Highly recommended to stand out from the crowd.
  4. Mailing address – Not compulsory, but should include if it’s relevant to the application.

For example, if you are applying to be a full-time TikToker, you should include your TikTok profile link to showcase your past works in order to be relevant. 

3. Proofread it. Zero Errors Allowed!

We’ve always stressed the importance of proofreading your job-hunting tools, be it your cover letter, resume or even the resume contact information section. Why is proofreading this section so important? 

One single mistake in your email address or phone number, for example, could totally ruin your chance at landing your dream job. How can hiring managers contact you for an interview if you are selected?

There’s also the risk of being labelled as unprofessional and unreliable. For safety’s sake, just spend a little more time on the contact information section since you will be proofreading the entire resume that you’ve majestically created as well.

4. Be Professional

This applies to many items in the contact information section. For a start, only use a formal name and do NOT include a typo in your name.

You should also use a formal email address. Even though it is a personal email address, it must not be inappropriate or too casual. For example, “imyourfather@gmail.com” or “notyourbusiness@jeemail.com“. Keep it simple and formal.

If you do decide to include your social media profile links in the contact information section, please go through your profiles and remove any inappropriate/sensitive content that may not be suitable for the job. 

Your resume is the first thing employers sees, even before meeting you in person. As such, you should try to portray a good image of yourself in your resume, regardless of any job that you are applying for.
